Eleven Years Later: A Sponsored Child Becomes a Teacher and Volunteer
Eleven years ago, he was one of the children supported by Yingming Charity.
Back then, he was just a boy—quiet, shy, but determined. His family struggled financially, yet he was always the one paying close attention in class, gripping his pencil tightly, and listening with unwavering focus.
Eleven years later, he has graduated from university.
He didn’t choose to stay in a big city. Instead, he returned to his hometown—Guzhang County in Xiangxi—and became a math teacher.
“I want to give back,” he told us. “Just like you once helped me, I want to help the next generation.”
This Chinese New Year, he joined us as a volunteer. Together, we visited students in remote villages, checked their homework, and offered tutoring. Watching him crouch by a tiny desk, patiently explaining math problems, I was struck by the scene.
This was the same boy we once supported. Now, he’s helping others with the same sincerity and care.
And in that moment, I understood—this is what we mean by "passing the flame."
One small light once lit his path. Now, he is the light for others.
